Memory leak extraordinaire!!!!!

Postby bummybumbum » 30 Mar 2013 08:36

Hello everyone.

I tried to find an answer, but all the posts which a google search brought up were many years old. If this is a simple fix with many redundant threads here, sorry. But I couldnt find any.

So, what the hell is going on with VLC? I just did a Windows XP re-install, and everything is fresh and new. One of the first things I did, of course, was install VLC. But something I've never seen before happens now, the memory usage and CPU usage slowly starts creeping upwards, until it's so high the player just shuts down. And when I hit the stop button before it reaches that critical point, the memory usage STILL continues to climb. Then I tried closing VLC altogether. Guess what? It STILL keeps climbing upward.

WTH?

I've installed VLC on the last many system builds, and re-installs. Most all of them with the exact same hardware and configurations. In fact, this time it's a re-install of XP Pro, and not a single thing has changed, either hardware or software. I installed XP, did a few of the normal things, like drivers for LAN, sound card driver install, ect. And the very first thing I did after installing only the most necessary drivers and software was to put VLC into it. And now this never before experienced problem.

Does anyone feel like helping out a long-time VLC user who is baffled by this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I guess I should add, it's the latest version, VLC 2.0.5

and it worked perfectly on the same system, same hardware, same software, as just a few days ago before I re-installed Windows XP. Nothing has changed, aside from this weird memory and CPU anomaly.

Thanks!

Drivers are very likely broken/not-up-to-date

Merci mon ami,
I will get started on that, though I assumed I had updated everything correctly.

If that proves to be a dead end, is there a suggestion #2?

Thanks

Hello,
thanks again. However, what output option should I change it to?

Also, I started VLC with no video selected, just to see what happens. I opened up the player, and even without a video loaded it started at 50% CPU, and within 1 min had climbed to such an unbelievably high memory usage that it crashed. Which is what it does with a movie loaded. No difference.

Doesn't sound like an output problem, does it?
