VLC doesn't work anymore (Lion issue?)

I upgraded to Lion a few days ago, and VLC worked fine until now. I shut down for the first time while VLC was still running, hoping the resume feature would open the window in the same place. That didn't happen, instead VLC doesn't work anymore, it won't play anything, I just get a message it doesn't support the container and I get it for everything (avi, mov, mp4, etc). Also, when VLC is running, the only item in the menu bar is VLC and clicking it just lags. I've tried restarting and even downloaded the latest VLC from the website but it didn't help. Has anyone experienced this? Can you help me? Thanks!

It's not Lion, I'm on Safari (10.6. and after downloading the latest OS update yesterday VLC has stopped working. With any file format that VLC used to be able to play, I get the same kind of message you do. I deleted VLC and installed it again and get the same error. And when VLC is running I don't get the full menu, the only item is VLC but there isn't any pulldown menu I can use on it.

So we seem to have the same issue but we're on different OS. The only thing I've done that I can remember is updating BetterTouchTool, do you use that?

I do remember looking through the advanced preferences (maybe changing something). But how can I reset if I can't acces VLC? Is there any file I can delete/replace? Thanks!

This has also happened to me. I've now reset the preferences, unstalled/reinstalled the app a few times, deleted every file with "vlc" in the name via terminal, and tried the nightly build - no dice. I'm running 10.6.8 - haven't upgraded to Lion yet. Any other ideas?

Delete "org.videolan.vlc" and "org.videolan.vlc.plist" in ~/Library/Preferences.

I've reset preferences, I've delete "org.videolan.vlc" and "org.videolan.vlc.plist" in ~/Library/Preferences but I have always this problem!!! Why???

I solved the problem
had created a folder in the ~/Library/Preferences named VLC Preferences. I deleted that, too, I reinstalled vlc and gone.
