vlc 0.9.3 crash when opening files from mount

Postby rhwinter » 30 Sep 2008 00:17

Hello there,

I have just installed vlc 0.9.3 and something nasty is going on. I have been using vlc for a long time with no problems (up to version 0.8.6i).
The files I usually read (mp3, avi, etc) are all on a computer mounted on my mac via MacFuse (core version 1.7.1) through SSH, using MacFusion (I tried both version 1.2 Beta 3 (1.1.268) and version 2.0.3).
I have just found out that if the "-o direct_io" option (in the "Extra Options (Advanced)" in MacFusion Favorites settings) is enabled, then VLC crashes on absolutely any file that I try to open from this mount.

Ok, so I could just turn that off, but the problem is I get terribly choppy playback.

Anyone having similar issues? Any ideas on what I can do? Is this a known bug (I'm assuming it is a bug, since it didn't happen before)?

Thanks for any help.

rhwinter, I dn't have MacFuse, so I can tell what's going on with your problem.

Apparently in direct_io, mmap is disabled (http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.fil ... .devel/949)

Since VLC uses mmap, that would explain things.

Yes, it would explain things. But there is something I don't get: why wasn't there any problem with previous versions? Is mmap new in 0.9? Is there a way to disable it (or something similar)?

Yes, mmap is new. You can disable it by using "Show package contents" when you select the VLC application in the Finder, and removing the Contents/MacOS/modules/libaccess_mmap_plugin.dylib file.

BTW. i don't know WHY something like this would EVER disable mmap. It is totally pointless, highly dangerous (it crashes applications) and thus should simply not be allowed to be user changeable.

hmmm!
Apparently it was something else...
Just installed vlc 0.9.5 and it works fine even with MacFusion's SSHFS "-o direct_io" option enabled.

Thank you all for the help anyway.
