vlc player does not start at all

Postby w.pasman » 19 Jan 2007 18:34

I downloaded VLC mediaplayer vlc-0.8.6a.dmg.
If I click on the application icon (the orange-white striped cone) nothing happens.
If I doubleclick the "VLC" application inside the package, I get

/Volumes/Applications/vlc-0.8.6a/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC; exit
dyld: /Volumes/Applications/vlc-0.8.6a/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC can't open library: /usr/lib/libstdc++.6.dylib (No such file or directory, errno = 2)
Trace/BPT trap
logout
[Process completed]

Anyone having good ideas to solve this? (I'm running OSX 10.3.3)

First hint! ;)
Incompatible Mac OS X and VLC version...
Latest Mac OS X package for 10.3.9 up to 10.4 (release 0.8.6a)
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html

Two solutions:
* Download the latest compatible VLC version (0.8.4a)
* Update Mac OS X.

Ha thanks, that probably explains...

Thanks also for the hint which one I need. Going to fetch it :-)

Strangely, I looked for the system specifications on both the root pages, support page and the download page (Features gave me a blank page anyway). I nowhere saw a minimal system requirement ...

Ah I now see that it is on the final download page. Never noticed that one..

I see you have multiple problems with VLC 0.8.4a.
Beware that this version is more than one (1) year old, and lack lots of features from the latest version.

A better solution would be to update your Mac OS X installation to 10.3.9 and use the current VLC version (0.8.6a). If you don't use software that lock you to the outdated OS X version though.

Thanks!
Main reason for me to install vlc was to play a m2t file. Which 0.8.4 does not do.... Were there changes to m2t playback since 0.8.4?

I'm not too eager to update the OS (never change working software).

No idea.
I have no .m2t file to test if it works with 0.8.6a or trunk

Oh well!

As far as I remember, m2t support was introduced in VLC 0.8.5, which requires 10.3.9 or later. Updating to 10.3.9 is a good idea btw. as it greatly improves the performance of your Mac since it is much more optimised than previous versions and includes major security fixes. It doesn't introduce any compatibility issues I know of. Additionally, it allows the installation of QuickTime 7.x, which is quite recommendable as well.

OK I'm not sure what was happening. I downloaded a few more .m2t files and it seems that the original .m2t file was bad, others are playing, well more or less (see my other posts  ). I found that mplayer DOES play the other m2t files that I downloaded correctly, however at a WAY SLOWER rate....
