VLC IGMP Protocol Usage

Postby davidb12345 » 20 Oct 2008 14:51

Hi

I'm using VLC to set up a streaming media demo, via a powerline modem. The modem requires a specific sequence of IGMP messages to work correctly. I'm trying to find out the sequence of IGMP messages which VLC generates.

My configuration is VLC acting as a server to an generating a multicast steam using RTP (Ubuntu), with another VLC-based PC acting as a client at the other end.

Does anyone know the IGMP protocol sequence in this configuration,

Thanks

David

Hi

Didn't get any replies on this but found the answer by experimenting with Wireshark:

1. When selecting a channel (multicast address) VLC as client generates a IGMP join message corresponding to the address. When pausing it generates an IGMP leave.

2. VLC as a server does not generate any IGMP queries.

3. VLC client replies to IGMP queries with an IGMP Join for the address its listening on.

4. Using Nemesis its possible to generate IGMP queries using say a perl script. This simulates router interaction.

David.
