... problem is the multi-output devices disagree with how VLC presents the many channels to it. I had a look at Configure Speakers for 5.1 in Audio MIDI Setup for these devices, but they looked perfectly usable to me. VLC 3.0.20 under macOS 14.7 Sonoma on M1 MacBook.

A SoundFont is not a codec but a bank of sounds. You can find some free to use SoundFont files here: https://github.com/wrightflyer/SF2_SoundFonts I suggest you to begin with Merlin's 8mbgm_plus13.sf2 because it's very well balanced and the timbres are quite "neutral", I mean not too much ...
